Scrotal Web Reduction

A smiling manAs they age, many men develop an enlarged scrotal sac that hangs further than it did when they were younger; this condition, often called “turkey neck,” can create insecurity and cause physical discomfort for men. Though the condition is harmless, it can cause hygiene issues and a displeasing cosmetic appearance. In addition, intercourse may be painful, and men may also experience problems with irritation from their scrotum rubbing against their inner thigh.

The treatment for this condition is a simple surgical excision of the extra tissue, a procedure called scrotal web reduction. Healing is rapid and most men can return to normal activity, and their scrotal sac to a normal appearance, in four to six weeks.

Can You Benefit from Scrotal Web Reduction?

Are you unhappy with a sagging scrotum? Do you feel uncomfortable wearing tight underwear and tight clothing because of it? Are you embarrassed by the way it looks, especially during intimate moments? You may be a good candidate for the scrotal web reduction procedure if:

  • You are in good health, with no serious medical concerns
  • You have excess, sagging skin on your scrotal sac
  • You have difficulty wearing condoms because of this condition
  • You experience discomfort during intercourse due to extra scrotal skin
  • You suffer from poor hygiene or chafing due to an enlarged scrotum

What to Expect During a Scrotal Web Reduction

Scrotal web reduction surgery is performed by Dr. Giunta on an outpatient basis with the patient under general anesthesia. The surgery, which lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, involves an incision made along the scrotum along with trimming of excess scrotal skin. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision.

Recovering from Surgery

A man and a woman smilingPatients will experience some soreness, swelling and bruising of the scrotum for the first week after surgery. Ice packs can be used to help alleviate swelling. An absorbent pad should be worn for the first week. Sexual activity and masturbation, as well as strenuous exercise, should be avoided for six to eight weeks. Most patients will see a significant improvement in the appearance of their scrotum after four weeks.
